October 1, 2012

Last Thursday I participated in a filming of a WKNO program called “Behind the Headlines”. It was led by Eric Barnes, Publisher of the Memphis Daily News. Also participating was Reid Dulberger, new head of EDGE (Economic Development Growth Engine) and two great reporters for the paper, Andy Meek and Bill Dries. The program will be shown at 7 PM on Friday October 5th and will also be (more…)

The Bridge at Remagen

September 29, 2012

I decided that I need a break from local government issues and talk about a controversy in history. I was watching a movie on television last Friday and it was the “Bridge at Remagen”. It was an exciting movie about the bravery of the troops who came across the last remaining bridge over the Rhine river during the second world war. I always thought the movie was a true representation of what happened at this historic event.

Well let me put some meat on the bones of the article. Following is the cost to local active MLGW, Memphis and Shelby County employees for their portion of annual health care.

PEPM- What Is It?

September 10, 2012

Instead of reading the latest vampire novel, I decided to read through the approved City of Memphis 2013 operating budget. I know_You are saying “Get a Life.” {PEPM I assume means Per Employee Per Month}.

I came to page 226 of the budget (HUMAN RESOURCES) which lists the FY 2013 Performance Measures and Metrics. This is like the political parties platforms. It is a goal of the administration but whether they really believe it is another question. But it is interesting (more…)

We Tote The Note

September 4, 2012

For years as I drove home from work, I passed a used car lot on Lamar that had a sign that said “We Tote The Note”.

Recently I asked the City and the County for information on property taxes for the fiscal year 2011 to see who totes the note locally. I wanted to know how much is paid by residential versus commercial, industrial, farm, exempt, multi and personalty.
