As I have watched the election season, it is like watching a morality play on a national stage. There are so many people and so many thoughts on what people consider important.
There are the single issue voters such as “It is the environment” or “abortion” or “jobs” or “the debt and deficit” or “terrorism”. All of these are important issues. However to me the single most important issue is “character”.
The character of the candidates is important. However the American people have little faith in the character of politicians and whether they will tell the truth. You need look no further than Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon.
What is important is the character of the American people. Under our constitution we have the best form of government in the world. However if the people do not have a virtuous and honest character, the form of government does not matter.
The recent tragic death of Ty Woods and another former seal killed in Libya is a good example of American character. Charles Woods, the father of Ty, gave a statement that puts character front and center. “We were an imperfect family, but we were a normal family. And I would hope that his legacy would live on. And that we would raise up a generation of American heroes, and that they would be inspired by his pictures and his life, and that we would raise up a generation of American heroes that are strong morally and strong in every other aspect of their life.”
From the politicians, we see deceit, lies and deception. As Americans we need to demand more from our leaders and demand that they tell the truth. Character and morals matter.
