I was shocked to read of the subpoena filed on behalf of the Shelby County Commission seeking to find the names of those who commented on Commercial Appeal articles about school consolidation. It appears that some County Commissioners are trying to build a case based on racial attitudes.
Well my name is Joe Saino and I am here to say that the great majority of parents want the best education for their children and that they should be given the opportunity to choose that school. There is an article today in the Wall Street Journal citing threatened lawsuits by the Louisiana Association of Educators (one of the two major Louisiana Teachers Unions) against any school that accepts students choosing a new school choice initiative in Louisiana. What Louisiana has done is let the education money follow the students at the choice of the student’s parents. The union sees a threat to their income and control and they do not like it.
This is exactly what is happening in Memphis and Shelby County. The teachers’ union does not want charter schools, municipal schools and certainly not parental choice. The Tennessee legislature almost passed a parental choice bill last year and it will come up again in the next session of the Tennessee legislature.
What is more race neutral that giving parents a choice? School choice programs result in better learning in safer schools. Parents can choose public, charter, parochial or private schools or whatever is best for their children. Isn’t that what everyone wants? Apparently some local union supporters have a different agenda.
