I read in the CA this morning about money spent to lobby the Tennessee legislature about wanted changes in the open records law. I will not take a back seat to anyone on experience in local open records work. I will flatly say that all meetings, conversations, negotiations etc. need to be open and public, no exceptions. Look at the Electrolux deal to see what happens when they are not open to the public.
I recently sent an open records request to the new Shelby County School Board (23 members) requesting information on the 2012 health care rates and policies for the Shelby County School Active Employees and retirees and the same for the Memphis City School Active Employees and retirees.
As usual I received a prompt answer from the Shelby County School staff and no answer to date from the Memphis City School staff. So I decided to publish the answer from the Shelby County School Staff.
I will show only family rates for 2011 and 2012 for active and retirees.
Active employees family rate for year, PPO plan, $11,080 total cost with the board paying $7,756 and the employee paying $3,324.
Active employees family rate for year, Plus plan, $18,963 total cost with the board paying $13,275 and the employee paying $5,688.
Retired employee (retiree and spouse not eligible for Medicare) same as active employee.
Retired employee eligible for medicare (employee or spouse eligible) $8,483 with the board paying $5,938 and the retiree paying $2,545 for medicare supplemental plan.
For the next year the total for retirees will go to $9,042 but the Shelby County Board has frozen their contribution share so the 70% board 30% employee split will go to 65.6% board to 34.4% employee. The 2012 rates for active employees will be determined this spring and go into effect September 1, 2012.
I am trying to get an answer from the Memphis City School system to get comparable information, but so far no answer.
