There is an article this morning about the new contract between the Memphis city Schools and the teachers union. They got a 2% raise retroactive to August 9, 2009 which will cost an extra $11.8 million for this year. They said that they were glad to accept a 2% raise this year because the Shelby County teachers got nothing.
I thought you would like to see the past contract (the new one is not posted yet). Look at some of the provisions like the leave of absence (page 25), salary (page 47, number of days for 10 month teachers (page 32) and the health insurance payments (page 38). (NOTE-The page number is the pdf file page number and the actual document page number might be different).
Also I noted the article about the possible layoffs of teachers in DeSoto County due to budget shortfalls. Budget shortfalls in Shelby County never seem to affect the Memphis City School system. I have also posted an analysis of a past open records request that I made to the Memphis City Schools. In it I posted the number of jobs for a variety of job titles and the minimum and maximum base salaries. It is time for an independent review of the Memphis City School System to see if the structure could be changed to be more efficient and to educate within the limited resources available.
