With the help of volunteers, we will be examining the agendas and subcommittee documents for the City Council and the County Commission before each meeting (every two weeks). There are lots of things that are considered and passed without broad media coverage. We want to highlight these items and inform our readers and encourage them to comment on agenda items to our website and also let their elected representatives know how they feel about these items.
Here are some selected items that we picked from recent City Council documents. I want to point out that the Shelby County website is far superior to the City Council website in its technology and the presentation of this information and much easier to find the supporting documents.
- There is a resolution to spend $700,000 on gateway art projects, $100,000 for each of the seven council districts.
- There is a resolution to recognize certain positions as appointed and exempt from civil service.
- There is a first reading of a referendum ordinance to change the City Charter to allow City employees to live in Shelby County whereas now they are required to live in the City of Memphis.
There are a lot of other things such as adding $50,000 to the tire redemption program and a request to spend $425,000 on fixtures and technology for car inspections.
Take a few minutes and look through these agendas and documents. It might affect your pocketbook. We will try to keep you informed.
